The Teignmouth Electron on Cayman Brac
The Teignmouth Electron ended up on Cayman Brac, a small island in the Caribbean, where she has been slowly breaking up for decades.
What she was
She was a 41-foot trimaran, built in 1968 for the Golden Globe Race. Some of the safety equipment Crowhurst designed for her was never finished. Read the full story on the Donald Crowhurst mystery page.
After 1969
After she was found drifting in the Atlantic, the boat was taken to the Caribbean. She was later sold and used for a time as a charter boat. She was eventually left on the shore at Cayman Brac.
The artists
Her slow decay drew artists. In 1998 Tacita Dean photographed her on the island, and in 1999 published a book of those photographs. Michael Jones McKean later documented her as part of his project Twelve Earths, with images dated 2017.
